In an exciting move that bridges history and future, Armada Music and Beatport are proud to present their new documentary, House Music Royalty: The Story of King Street Sounds, released on November 14.
This 35-minute film chronicles the journey of King Street Sounds, a cornerstone of NYC’s house music scene, as it embarks on a revitalized chapter under Armada Music’s stewardship.
King Street Sounds, founded in 1993 by Hisa Ishioka, was inspired by the vibrancy of New York City’s underground house scene and Ishioka’s roots in Japan.
The label quickly became synonymous with quality house music, with its ethos grounded in the soulful, inclusive spirit fostered at venues like the Paradise Garage.
Filmed across global dance hubs—New York, London, Manchester, and Ibiza—the documentary shines a spotlight on King Street’s pivotal role in shaping house music worldwide.
Viewers can expect insights from influential figures like Blaze, Barbara Tucker, David Morales, and Ultra Naté, who share firsthand accounts of the label’s early days and the artistic movement it helped propel.
The film also connects the past to the present, featuring contemporary voices like Kasango and Natalie Maddix of the House Gospel Choir.
The soundtrack, packed with influential tracks by artists such as Kerri Chandler, Dennis Ferrer, and Mood II Swing, serves as both a tribute and an immersive experience for fans.
Maykel Piron, CEO of Armada Music, expressed the importance of this project: “We are thrilled to unveil this documentary that highlights the monumental journey of King Street Sounds. It’s a celebration of its rich legacy and an invitation for new audiences to discover the magic that continues to drive house music.”
Echoing this sentiment, David Browne, Head of Live at Beatport, noted, “This collaboration represents our commitment to preserving the legacies that have shaped house music. We aim to showcase not just the story of King Street, but the broader cultural roots of the genre.”
The documentary marks only the beginning of Armada Music’s commitment to King Street.
Following its acquisition by Armada’s BEAT Music Fund in June 2023, the label has been infused with fresh energy through initiatives like the remix series ‘King Street: Beat Match’, which reimagines classics for new listeners, and vinyl catalog repressings.
Additionally, Armada Music plans to support creative development through exclusive writing camps.
House Music Royalty: The Story of King Street Sounds promises to captivate both seasoned house music enthusiasts and those curious about the evolution of one of NYC’s most influential labels.
Discover the legacy and future of King Street Sounds—a name synonymous with house music royalty—under the innovative direction of Armada Music and the global reach of Beatport.
